Why E911?

911 is the go-to number for emergency services, but until recently, for companies using multi-line telephone systems (MLTS) it was surprisingly difficult to access emergency services by dialing 911 alone. If your organization uses a multi-line system or has a remote, mobile or hybrid workforce there’s a good chance your business will need to comply with E911 requirements.

E911 regulation was put into place to protect your employees who have an emergency both in the office and remote settings. These regulations aim at accurately securing the caller’s location and ensuring a quick connection to emergency responders.

The FCC requires that providers of interconnected VoIP telephone services using the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) meet Enhanced 911 (E911) obligations. E911 systems automatically provide emergency service personnel with a 911 caller’s call-back number and, in most cases, location information.

E911 Compliance

The two federal E911 laws that are in effect are Kari’s Law and RAY BAUM’S Act. These laws are applicable to any on-premises, Cloud, or hybrid MLTS installed, sold, or leased after February 16, 2020. However, most companies are voluntarily complying with these laws to improve emergency services’ response time to help save lives.

E911 is especially critical for organizations with large campuses, such as hotels, hospitals, and schools. The exact steps for compliance will depend on pending California legislation, but here are a few key considerations when planning for E911 compliance:

  • Enhanced 911 (E911) provides more accurate location information and a callback number to PSAP.

  • E911 compliance means meeting Kari’s Law & Ray Baum’s Act, two federal laws that set standards for on-premises, Cloud, or hybrid multi-line telephone systems )MLTS) installed, sold, or leased after February 16, 2020.

  • It is highly recommended that all systems, even the exempt pre-2020 systems, are updated to be compliant with federal laws to keep employees safe.

  • Some states have their own Enhanced 911 legislation. In California, more E911 legislation is pending, which will require organizations to evolve their communications solutions, including analog phone systems that are difficult to bring into compliance.
